As most everyone knows, Baxter's in Paoli was Bill's favorite place to visit without fail every Tuesday afternoon, for a Bloody Mary (or an occasional pint of Guinness) with good friends and to exhibit his truly remarkable skills as a "shanachie".

On Tuesday November 23, Kelly and Colleen went to Baxter's at Bill's usual time, meeting the gracious owner Ed, the kind bartender Arlene, and the gathered group of friends.  Arlene served one of her special Bloody Marys in Bill's usual spot at the bar, next to one of his British bowler hats, and Bill bought his great group of friends one last round for old times' sake. The ladies and gentlemen present all toasted a wonderful man and much-missed friend who will be forever in their memories.

Kelly and Colleen were very touched when Ed offered to display a personal remembrance to accompany the picture of Bill's empty spot at the bar that will hereafter greet the patrons at Baxters.  Kelly and Colleen, knowing well Bill's fondness for hats, donated one of the famous tweed driving caps that was ever-present as he zipped around in his beloved MG; the picture and cap will both shortly become part of Baxters' comfortable ambiance.

Be sure to visit Baxter's in Paoli when you get a chance and raise a glass to the memory of William Francis Doyle.


At 2:15am on November 16th, the world lost its consummate father, "Grandsir," husband, teacher, sailor, chef, gourmand and good friend.

William Francis Doyle, age 68, of Malvern, passed away on Tuesday, November 16th, 2010 at Paoli Memorial Hospital, with his family at his side.

Born in Haddonfield, New Jersey, Bill was the son of the late Henry Robert Doyle and Madeline Bereniece Hurley Doyle and the beloved husband for 43 years of the late Susan Thorn Doyle.  He is survived by two daughters, Kelly Doyle DeMillion of Downingtown and Colleen Doyle Moore of Birmingham, Alabama, and four grandchildren, Molly, Meggie, Conor, and Keira; brother of Genevieve Doyle DeGrasse, Sara Doyle Blackburn, Alice Doyle Walton, Michael Doyle, and the late Charles Doyle and Robert Doyle.

Bill attended high school at Malvern Preparatory School and after graduating from Mount Saint Mary’s University returned to teach at Malvern Prep for several years.  He then joined Tredyffrin-Easttown School District, teaching English at Conestoga High School for over 25 years before retiring.  He then used his educational talents as a substitute teacher for Great Valley School District.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at St. Patrick’s Church on Channing Avenue in Malvern on Friday, November 19 at 11 a.m.  Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken.  Visitation will be held Thursday, November 18th from 6-8 p.m. at Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 East Lancaster Ave., Paoli.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Cancer Center at Paoli Hospital (484-565-1385 or online) or Jefferson Hospice (484-580-1410 or online).

Monday 11/15, 11pm:  Bill's medical team has transitioned him to hospice care.  Since they did not recommend moving him in his current condition, Bill entered "in-hospital hospice": in the same physical room but now in the capable hands of the profoundly kind and caring hospice team.  He is comfortable and peaceful, surrounded by his family and an outpouring of love, not only from those at his bedside but also expressed by so many, near and far.

Monday 11/15:  Colleen arrived from Alabama and joined Kelly, John and Bill's brother Michael at Bill's side.

Bill was overwhelmed and extremely touched by the wonderful comments posted here, with big grins and nods of happy recognition greeting the many familiar names and memories.  Bill and his family want to express their most heartfelt gratitude to everyone for the extraordinary emotions, memories, prayers, stories, well-wishes and other thoughtful sentiments.

Sunday 11/14, 8:30pm:  Bill is still in in the hospital, resting comfortably.  While he's sleeping a lot because of the pain medications, when awake he has expressed his gratitude for all the good wishes and prayers sent his way.

Bill's well-known sense of humor is always present (especially when the nurse is cute!) and his grin lights up the room.

Saturday 11/13, 11pm:  Bill was admitted to Paoli Memorial Hospital on Thursday for pain management; they will be running tests over the next few days and he will be in the hospital at least through Monday.

Although he currently prefers not to have any visitors or calls, Bill greatly appreciates your thoughts and prayers.

November 2010:  For those who may not already know, Bill was diagnosed with metastasized cancer and has been undergoing outpatient chemotherapy for the last few months.
